Excessive Tearing

Excessive tearing (epiphora) happens when tears overflow the eyelid. It can result from too much tear production, blockage of tear drainage, or, paradoxically, dry eye causing reflex tearing.

Causes

  • Dry eye (reflex tearing)
  • Allergies
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Blocked tear duct (nasolacrimal obstruction)
  • Foreign body or eyelash irritation
  • Eyelid problems (ectropion, entropion)
  • Cold weather, wind

Treatment

  • Address underlying cause
  • Lubricating drops if dry eye
  • Tear duct probing or surgery for blockage
  • Eyelid repair for malposition
