Feeding Problems

Feeding problems include difficulty with intake, swallowing, food refusal, or excessive selectivity. Some are normal developmental phases; some require medical or therapeutic intervention.

Common Causes

  • Picky eating (often a normal phase)
  • Reflux
  • Oral-motor delays
  • Food allergies or intolerances
  • Sensory processing differences
  • Autism spectrum considerations
  • Anatomic problems

When to See a Doctor

  • Poor weight gain or weight loss
  • Choking, gagging, or aspiration
  • Very limited variety despite age
  • Distressing mealtimes
