Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome
Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome is a congenital heart condition in which an extra electrical pathway between atria and ventricles can cause fast heartbeats and, rarely, sudden cardiac death. Catheter ablation can be curative.
Quick Facts
- ICD-10: I45.6
- Curable: Yes, with ablation
Symptoms
- Palpitations (often very fast heart rate)
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Chest discomfort
- Fainting
- Many people have the pattern on ECG without symptoms
Diagnosis
- Characteristic ECG pattern (delta wave, short PR interval)
- Holter monitoring
- Electrophysiology study
Treatment
- Catheter ablation (definitive treatment for most symptomatic patients)
- Medications for episodes (avoid AV nodal blockers in atrial fibrillation with WPW)
- Risk stratification for asymptomatic patients
