Sudden Cardiac Death
Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is unexpected death from a cardiac cause within an hour of symptom onset. Most cases result from ventricular arrhythmias, often in people with underlying heart disease.

Causes
- Coronary artery disease (most common in adults)
- Cardiomyopathies
- Inherited arrhythmia syndromes (long QT, Brugada, ARVC)
- Heart failure
- Valve disease
- Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (common cause in young athletes)
Prevention
- Treat underlying heart disease
- Implantable cardioverter-defibrillator for high-risk patients
- Family screening if hereditary cause
- CPR and AED access in public places
