Retropharyngeal Abscess

A retropharyngeal abscess is a collection of pus deep in the back of the throat. It is most common in children but can occur at any age, and it can rapidly threaten the airway.

Suspect this with sore throat plus difficulty swallowing, drooling, fever, neck stiffness, muffled voice, or breathing difficulty.

Symptoms

  • Sore throat, often severe
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Drooling
  • Fever
  • Stiff or painful neck
  • Muffled voice ('hot potato voice')
  • Breathing difficulty or stridor (late)

Treatment

  • Hospitalization with airway monitoring
  • IV antibiotics
  • Surgical drainage
