Prolactinoma

A prolactinoma is a benign tumor of the pituitary gland that produces excess prolactin. It causes menstrual irregularities and infertility in women and erectile dysfunction or low libido in men. Most respond very well to oral medication.

Both (with large tumors)

  • Headaches
  • Vision problems (loss of peripheral vision)

Treatment

  • Dopamine agonists (cabergoline or bromocriptine) — first line and usually effective
  • Surgery (transsphenoidal) if medication fails or for very large tumors
  • Radiation in rare refractory cases
