Perianal Abscess

A perianal abscess is a collection of pus near the anus, usually from infection of anal glands. It typically requires surgical drainage and may develop into a fistula.

Quick Facts

  • ICD-10: K61

Symptoms

  • Severe pain near the anus, worse with sitting or bowel movements
  • Swelling and redness
  • Drainage of pus
  • Fever
  • Constipation from pain

Treatment

  • Surgical incision and drainage (essential — antibiotics alone are not sufficient)
  • Antibiotics in selected cases (especially with cellulitis, diabetes, or immunosuppression)
  • Sitz baths after drainage
  • Stool softeners
  • Pain control
  • Monitor for fistula development

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor or go to the emergency department for any painful anal mass, especially with fever. Untreated abscesses can spread to deeper tissues.
