Mycoplasma Pneumonia

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a common cause of atypical pneumonia, often called 'walking pneumonia' because symptoms can be mild enough to allow normal activities. It is most common in school-age children and young adults.

Symptoms

  • Persistent dry cough
  • Fever (often low-grade)
  • Sore throat
  • Headache, fatigue
  • Chest discomfort
  • Rash in some patients

Treatment

  • Macrolide antibiotics (azithromycin) — first line
  • Tetracyclines or fluoroquinolones in adults
  • Supportive care
  • Beta-lactam antibiotics don't work — mycoplasma has no cell wall
