Lung Abscess
A lung abscess is a cavity of pus within lung tissue, most often from aspiration of bacteria from the mouth into the lungs. It usually responds to prolonged antibiotics.

Symptoms
- Cough, often with foul-smelling sputum
- Coughing up blood
- Fever, night sweats, chills
- Chest pain with breathing
- Weight loss, fatigue
- Bad breath
Risk Factors
- Aspiration (alcohol use, seizures, stroke, poor swallowing)
- Poor dental hygiene
- Immunosuppression
- Lung cancer (can cause obstruction)
Treatment
- Prolonged antibiotics (often 4–6 weeks)
- Drainage in selected cases (percutaneous or surgical)
- Treat aspiration risk and dental issues
