Lung Abscess

A lung abscess is a cavity of pus within lung tissue, most often from aspiration of bacteria from the mouth into the lungs. It usually responds to prolonged antibiotics.

Symptoms

  • Cough, often with foul-smelling sputum
  • Coughing up blood
  • Fever, night sweats, chills
  • Chest pain with breathing
  • Weight loss, fatigue
  • Bad breath

Risk Factors

  • Aspiration (alcohol use, seizures, stroke, poor swallowing)
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Immunosuppression
  • Lung cancer (can cause obstruction)

Treatment

  • Prolonged antibiotics (often 4–6 weeks)
  • Drainage in selected cases (percutaneous or surgical)
  • Treat aspiration risk and dental issues
