Chondromalacia Patella
Chondromalacia patella involves softening, fissuring, or wearing down of the cartilage on the back of the kneecap, causing knee pain. It is most common in younger adults, runners, and adolescents.

Symptoms
- Pain in or around the front of the knee
- Worse with stairs, squats, prolonged sitting
- Grinding or crackling sensation with knee movement
- Sometimes mild swelling
Treatment
- Activity modification — avoid aggravating activities
- NSAIDs for pain
- Physical therapy — quadriceps and hip strengthening
- Bracing or taping in selected cases
- Surgery rarely needed
