Bradycardia

Bradycardia is a resting heart rate below 60 beats per minute. It can be normal in well-conditioned athletes but may signal a heart conduction problem when symptomatic.

  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Lightheadedness or fainting
  • Shortness of breath with exertion
  • Chest discomfort
  • Confusion or memory problems

Causes

  • Athletic conditioning (benign)
  • Sleep
  • Medications (beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, digoxin)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Sinus node dysfunction
  • Heart block
  • Heart attack
  • Electrolyte abnormalities

Treatment

  • None if asymptomatic and no underlying disease
  • Treat underlying cause
  • Adjust or discontinue contributing medications
  • Pacemaker for symptomatic heart block or sinus node disease
