Bone metastases are cancers that have spread from elsewhere in the body to bone. They are most common from breast, prostate, lung, kidney, and thyroid cancers, and can cause significant pain and fractures.

Symptoms

  • Bone pain, often worse at night or with weight-bearing
  • Fractures from minor trauma (pathologic fractures)
  • Numbness, weakness, or paralysis (if spine involved)
  • High calcium levels (confusion, fatigue, kidney issues)

Treatment

  • Treat the primary cancer
  • Bisphosphonates or denosumab to strengthen bone
  • Radiation for painful sites
  • Surgery for impending or actual fractures
  • Pain management
  • Manage hypercalcemia
