Autonomic Neuropathy

Autonomic neuropathy is damage to nerves that control automatic body functions like blood pressure, digestion, bladder, and sweating. Diabetes is the most common cause.

Symptoms

  • Lightheadedness on standing (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Slow stomach emptying, nausea, bloating (gastroparesis)
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Bladder problems
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Abnormal sweating
  • Heart rate that doesn't change appropriately with exercise

Causes

  • Diabetes (most common)
  • Amyloidosis
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Multiple system atrophy
  • Some medications and toxins

Treatment

  • Treat underlying cause (tight glucose control in diabetes)
  • Compression stockings, salt, midodrine for orthostatic hypotension
  • Dietary changes and medications for gastroparesis
  • Bladder management
