Alcohol Poisoning

Alcohol poisoning is a severe and potentially fatal consequence of consuming a large amount of alcohol in a short time. It depresses breathing and protective reflexes and can be lethal without intervention.

Call 911 Immediately

Signs of alcohol poisoning:
  • Confusion or unresponsiveness
  • Vomiting while unable to wake up
  • Seizures
  • Slow or irregular breathing (fewer than 8 per minute)
  • Pale or bluish skin
  • Hypothermia

Do not let the person 'sleep it off'. Place them on their side to prevent choking. Call 911.

Hospital Treatment

  • Airway protection
  • IV fluids and glucose
  • Thiamine
  • Monitoring for low blood sugar, electrolytes
  • Treatment of associated injuries or co-ingestions
