Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive eye disease affecting central vision. There are two types: dry (more common) and wet (more aggressive but treatable with injections).

Types

  • Dry (atrophic) — most common; gradual central vision loss
  • Wet (neovascular) — abnormal blood vessels leak under retina; more sudden vision loss

Treatment

  • Dry AMD: AREDS2 vitamin supplements may slow progression
  • Wet AMD: intravitreal anti-VEGF injections (ranibizumab, aflibercept, faricimab)
  • Don't smoke; healthy diet rich in leafy greens
  • Low-vision rehabilitation
