Adrenal Tumors

Adrenal tumors are masses on the adrenal glands. Most are benign and non-functioning, found incidentally on imaging. Some produce hormones (pheochromocytoma, cortisol- or aldosterone-producing adenomas) and rarely they are cancerous.

Workup

  • Hormone evaluation (cortisol, aldosterone, metanephrines, sex hormones)
  • Imaging characteristics (CT density, MRI features)
  • Biopsy generally avoided unless cancer suspected

Treatment

  • Observation for small non-functioning benign masses
  • Adrenalectomy for hormone-producing or suspicious tumors
  • Specific medical management (e.g., alpha blockade before pheochromocytoma surgery)
