Adjustment Disorder
Adjustment disorder is a stress-related condition involving emotional or behavioral symptoms following an identifiable stressor (job loss, relationship breakup, illness). Symptoms are out of proportion to expected reactions and cause significant distress or impairment.

Symptoms
- Depressed mood, anxiety, or both
- Difficulty functioning at work/school/home
- Withdrawal from activities
- In adolescents: conduct disturbances
- Symptoms within 3 months of stressor; resolve within 6 months after stressor ends
Treatment
- Short-term psychotherapy (especially supportive and cognitive behavioral)
- Brief medication when needed (sleep, anxiety)
- Stress management, social support
